The UpTake is a citizen-fueled, online video news gathering organization. Established July 2007.

Hi. We're The UpTake. We're an alternative to mainstream media, but mostly we're a training resource for your average or not-so-average Joe & Jane. We want to teach you to (drumroll & a thunderclap) BE THE MEDIA.

You might know us from our coverage at the Republican National Convention, our live-stream of the Coleman v. Franken recount trial, our play-by-play coverage of the Minnesota legislature, our daily clips of White House events...or maybe you've just seen us and our modest army of citizen journalists around town.

Watch our front page daily for news, livestreams of local and national events, and our radio show/webcast daily at 5 PM: http://www.theuptake.org.

Got a story tip? Want to film a story? Want to learn HOW to film a story? Want to learn how to (ahem, drum roll & thunderclap) BE THE MEDIA? Do these things:

1. Fill out our slick "who are you?" survey.
2. Drop the team a line at info@theuptake.org
3. Then check our event calendar.

We believe in truth, transparency, kindness and the American Way (whatever that is these days). Come watch us. Better yet: join us!

Our work is distributed simultaneously on multiple content and social networks .  You can also find us on:

The first of these startups, Zanby, is a social networking and organizational platform. He lives on a lake in Minnesota, has a kayak and a canoe, 4 boys, 3 cats and an undying love of soccer. // chris.dykstra at theuptake dot org // Twitter

Jason Barnett, Executive Director

Jason is co-founder and Executive Director of The UpTake, a video-based media organization that merges social media strategy and online technology, tools and access to engage and empower citizen journalists.

With a degree in Fine Arts, Jason spent 15 years as a professional sculptor. With an interest in news, politics, technology and creative thinking, Jason recognized the power of online video and social networking. Since its inception, The UpTake has advanced the frontier of news gathering, garnering national notoriety through its coverage of the 2008 political conventions and the Minnesota U.S. Senate recount and trial. He lives in Saint Paul with his wife, daughter and son, and is a stay-at-home dad, feeling strongly that someone needs to be home to protect the cats from the two small humans.  // jason.barnett at theuptake dot org // Twitter

Chuck Olsen, Co-Founder

Chuck is the founder of Minnesota Stories, called one of the best videoblogs by the New York Times and winner of two Vloggies Awards. He is the producer-director of “Blogumentary,” a documentary feature film about the rise of political and personal blogs. His work has screened at the Walker Art Center, Harvard University, and on renegade laptops around the world. In politics, Chuck has helped the campaigns of Rep. Keith Ellison and Sen. John Edwards use online video successfully. Chuck is the Minneapolis correspondent for Rocketboom and works as a freelance producer, videographer, editor and educator. The rest of the time, Chuck serves as a scratching post for his cat, Mooki, who has his own videoblog but is not running for office. // chuck.olsen at theuptake dot org // Twitter

Jennifer Whigham, Communications & Citizen Journalist Coordinator

Jennifer was once described as the "uber-staffer."  She'll take it.  (And for a Communications Director, she doesn't doesn't like to talk about herself.) // jennifer.whigham at theuptake dot org

Noah Kunin, DC Special Correspondent

Noah is the founder of Blanked-Out, a political blog known for its political analysis and first to file coverage of the I-35W Bridge Collapse.  Noah has an eclectic background in genetic engineering, anti-Iraq War and environmental activism and non-profit technology management.  In 2006, after working on the 2004 Presidential race and the 2005 Minneapolis Mayoral race, he joined an esteemed list of former political operatives turned journalists.  He is much happier at lampooning media spin than enabling it.  He works as the Multimedia Content Producer for The Sunlight Foundation in Washington, DC.  // noah.kunin at theuptake dot org // Twitter

Matt Johnson, Technical Lead

Matt wandered into our offices just before the RNC like an angel from above and helped us wire our offices for internet, phones and our top secret transporter room.  He hasn't left since (The UpTake that is, not our office… but sometimes we wonder.) Besides making video fly through the internet, Matt works part time for Warecorp.

Erin Maye, Intern

Erin is a 2008 graduate of the University of St. Thomas with majors in Political Science and Justice and Peace Studies. She has a progressive background with stints volunteering/working for Moveon.org, Grassroots campaigns and Al Franken's Senate campaign.  She frequently eats boxes of macaroni and cheese spirals.
